Michał Oleszczyk, Ph.D.
Doctor of film studies, adjunct at the Faculty of Artes Liberales UW. In 2014-2016 the artistic director of the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia. Film critic and translator, his reviews appear in Poland and the United States, in periodicals such as “Kino”, “Dwutygodnik” and “RogerEbert.com”. Winner of the Krzysztof Mętrak Prize and scholarship holder of the monthly Polityka. In 2011-2013, programmer and spokesman for the Off Plus Camera festival, which he managed as the artistic director at the first edition in 2008. Author of the book “Bitterness of Exile: Terence Davies Cinema” and co-author (together with Kuba Mikurda) of river-interview with Guy Maddin “Derailed cinema”. Author of the blog “Last chair on the right”, which was chosen Blog of the Year in the category “Culture” in the Onet competition in 2010. Winner of the Polish Film Institute award in the “Film Criticism” category. A member of the international association of film critics FIPRESCI and the Film Literature Association at the Polish Filmmakers Association. In the years 2012-2015 an activist of the Polish Filmmakers NYC organization, promoting Polish cinema in New York. He defended his master’s thesis in film studies in 2006 (it concerned the formal and thematic analysis of Terence Davies’s film “The End of a Long Day”). He defended his doctoral thesis devoted to critical and film works by Pauline Kael in 2012 at the Jagiellonian University.
