Janusz Zaorski, Ph.D.

Screenwriter, director, and film producer. University lecturer and PhD in directing. He graduated from the Directing Department at the Łódź Film School. He made his directorial debut in 1970 with the film Na dobranoc. He has also appeared as an actor in several films.
In 1987, he became the Chair of the Polish Federation of Film Discussion Clubs, and in 1988, he was appointed Artistic Director of the “Dom” Film Studio. From 1987 to 1989, he was a member of the Cinematography Committee. Between 1991 and 1993, he served as President of the Committee for Radio and Television, and from 1994 to 1995, as Chair of the National Broadcasting Council.
He has directed more than a dozen feature films, including: MOTHER OF THE KINGS (1982, Silver Bear – Berlin, Golden Lions – Gdynia), LAKE CONSTANCE (1985, Golden Leopard – Locarno), FOOTBALL POKER (1988), HAPPY NEW YORK (1997, Best Director Award – Gdynia), SIBERIAN EXILE (Syberiada Polska, 2013, Grand Prix at the Seattle Film Festival).
In 2011, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis by Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski. He is also a recipient of the “TeleSplendor” Award and the Jan Machulski Award for Lifetime Achievement in Support of Polish Independent Cinema.
Since 2013, he has served as Chair of the Program Council of the KOSMOPOLIS Institute – Foundation for Science, Culture, and Education. He is a member of the European Film Academy.
