KAMERALNE LATO is more than just competitions, film screenings and educational activities. An important part of the festival is the SCRIPTMARKET.PRO section, which features numerous events aimed at young members of the film industry.
SCRIPTMARKET.PRO is an accompanying event to the International Film Meetings KAMERALNE LATO dedicated to young creators, which could be a platform for establishing collaboration in the production and co-production of feature films, with a particular focus on low-budget projects created by young directors and producers.
Participation in this section enables the knowledge, contacts, experiences and good practices exchange among young screenwriters, directors, producers as well as film school representatives, associations of young filmmakers and institutions.
This year, the co-organiser of the industry section is KIPA Young Producers Section. As part of SCRIPTMARKET.PRO, there will also be a debate featuring representatives of leading film schools in Poland, as well as workshops, meetings with experienced filmmakers and study visits organised under the FILMIC RADOM banner.
– Over the past few years, KAMERALNE LATO has consistently developed its industry section, aimed at young professionals or film school students. The meetings are organised in the Mazovian Centre for Contemporary Art ELEKTROWNIA, but are also being registered and available as educational materials. Together with the directors of KAMERALNE LATO Festival – Łukasz Adamski and Bartosz Bednarczyk – we would love to express our joy, that young producers from Polish Producers Alliance (KIPA) and representatives of five film schools have once again joined our group of guests and partners – says dr Anna Wróblewska, coordinator of the industry section.
KIPA Young Producers Section’s panel
Film school graduates often struggle with the question, on how to make their first step into the industry, which will lead them to their dream feature-film debut. Doubts about how to shape a career after graduation, how to find a producer and on what they should focus on during cooperation, will be addressed through panels and open consultations organized by KIPA Young Producers Section.
– As the Young Producers Section, it is important for us to support our colleagues in the first steps they make after graduating. During the KAMERALNE LATO Festival we will focus on the producer-director relationship. We will offer directors guidance on how to navigate this relationship and build satisfying collaborations, while young producers will learn where to find their place in the industry after graduation – says Joanna Tatko, coordinator of the KIPA Young Producers Section.
Workshop about the usage of AI in film productions – how to find a friend in your greatest enemy?
Current discussions about artificial intelligence are dominated by the topic of threats to artistic quality, audiovisual education, and the future of various film professions. “How to find a friend in your greatest enemy” will be explained by Matt Subieta, graduate of Wajda School as well as directing and screenwriting in Australia, who debuted in 2010 with his short film “Tourist” at a screening during the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. He has created documentary series for CANAL+, Discovery and History Channel and hundreds of short films for the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. He also represented Platige Image as a creative director in New York.
Director and enthusiast of new technologies, who constantly researches programmes and applications for their usefulness in filmmaking, will present examples of how neural networks and artificial intelligence can be applied in film and animation. During a dynamic presentation, he will demonstrate how AI can be used in documentary filmmaking, research and documentation, preparing projects for pitching sessions, photo editing etc.
Debate about film education in Poland
After the success of last year’s debate, we once again invite representatives of leading polish film schools to discuss the system of film education in our country. How does the approach to young producers differ between film schools? Which career paths individual institutions offer? In which organizations students can look for additional professional and financial support, while producing their short-form productions? These and many other topics will be discussed by: Milenia Fiedler, Barbara Pawłowska, Filip Marczewski, Jan P. Matuszyński and Jerzy Rados.
– By meeting in Radom, we are continuing a conversation that began at the Warsaw Film Festival among representatives of five film schools regarding the current challenges facing film education. Each of these schools is different, each has its own character, and each faces unique challenges that must be addressed on an ongoing basis – says Jerzy Rados, director of the Gdynia Film School and initiator of the meeting. – The world is changing. The market is evolving, funding sources are shifting, audience tastes are changing. Today, the profession of a director looks completely different than it did 30, 20, or even 10 years ago! We live in the age of transmedia, and education must keep pace with these global transformations. Due to the influence of major corporations and streaming platforms, a new model of directing has emerged on the Polish market – a skilled professional working within a formatted serial production, entrusted with specific tasks. This is just one example of an issue we need to address, because if we fail to do so, the world will decide for us. Who should we educate, how should we educate them, and for what kind of work – these are the greatest challenges.
Meeting with Krzysztof Zanussi
Feature film debut is a milestone in the career of every young movie creator. Together with our special guest Krzysztof Zanussi – one of the most acclaimed Polish directors and producers in the whole world – we will discuss, whether an inexperienced artist has a chance for contract with big film studio and how the realities of making a debut in Poland differ from those in other film industries around the world.
Filmic Radom
As every year, in order to promote Radom as an excellent location for film shoots, participants of the industry section will be invited to take part in film-focused study visits. During these tours, young filmmakers will have the opportunity to discover Radom’s potential as a filming location for both contemporary and historical productions.
– Radom and its surrounding area offer a very wide range of potential filming locations, including both urban settings and natural landscapes that have not yet been shown in film productions. One of the city’s advantages is its central location within Poland – says Bartosz Bednarczyk, the festival’s managing director.
Registration is required for the study visits and should be completed at the festival office.
Events organized as part of the SCRIPTMARKET.PRO industry section will take place from July 6-8, 2023, at the Mazovian Centre for Contemporary Art ELEKTROWNIA in Radom, as well as in various urban locations as part of the FILMIC RADOM. Entry to all of them is open and for free.
